Before it was Goodrich, the village was called Godric's Castle. We borrowed the name.

Goodrich Castle

English Heritage's red sandstone castle sits on the hill above the village. Walk up Castle Lane, look round, come back down for cake. Breakfast before, or scones after.

The long-distance path runs through Goodrich. Coming through the village, the spire of St Giles' is your marker, and we're on the corner below it. Flasks filled, takeaway cups for the trail.

Kerne Bridge and the Wye

Pull out at the canoe launch under Kerne Bridge and walk up the lane. It's a quiet road and uphill all the way, which is how you earn the bacon bap.

By car from Ross-on-Wye

Take the A40 towards Monmouth and turn off for Goodrich. Free parking on site, pull straight in off the road.

Where can I get breakfast near Goodrich Castle?

Godric's Café is at The Hostelrie in Goodrich village, about three minutes' walk from Goodrich Castle down Castle Lane. We're open Monday to Saturday from 9 until 3 for breakfast, lunch and teas, and on Sunday from 9 until 10:30.

What time do you serve breakfast?

Monday to Saturday we're open from 9am until 3pm. Breakfast runs until 11:30am and lunch from noon. On Sunday we're open 9am until 10:30am, and last orders for breakfast are at 10:30am while the kitchen gets ready for the roast. Cookies and croissants are always on the counter. From Monday 19 October we open at 8am.

Do I need to book?

No. We don't take bookings, just walk in. If you're a big group of walkers or paddlers, ring us on 01600 890241 and we'll be ready for you.

Are dogs allowed?

Yes, inside and out, muddy or otherwise. There's a water bowl by the door and takeaway cups if you're heading back out on the trail.

Is there parking?

Yes, free parking on site. Pull straight in off the road.

Do you have vegan, vegetarian or gluten-free food?

Gluten-free and dairy-free bakes every day, and vegetarian and vegan versions of most breakfast plates. Tell us about any allergy when you order.

Is it a good stop on the Wye Valley Walk?

It's right on it. Coming through Goodrich, head for the spire of St Giles' church; the footpath drops into the village and we're on the corner, about five minutes from the church. Fill your flask and we'll do takeaway cups.

How far is it from Ross-on-Wye and Symonds Yat?

Goodrich sits between Ross-on-Wye and Monmouth, just off the A40. Ross-on-Wye is about ten minutes by car and Symonds Yat about fifteen. Kerne Bridge and the river are fifteen minutes' walk downhill.

Is Godric's Café the same as The Hostelrie pub?

We share the building. Godric's is the daytime café, with breakfast, coffee and cake. The pub and restaurant open from noon. For Sunday lunch and bookings, see hostelrie.com.
